The Hill Bars

South (@scthenest)

A: The Nest already looks a lot better this year, with a new layout and decorations which help create a good atmosphere. Great bar staff (I’m not being biased!), drinks and you’re guaranteed to see someone you know there. It is the home of South social life and a place all Southies know and love.

H: Don’t believe the absolute propaganda that you hear from other colleges. The Nest is a great bar that served me well throughout first year, it is what you make it. The Nest is always there for you.

Stevo (@stephenson.central)

A: This bar is so underrated. While you are in college accommodation Stevo bar should be taken advantage of, with an excellent entertainment selection and atmosphere.

H: The design and layout of this bar is one of the best on the hill, there are games, pool, darts and always has a fair level of attendance. It’s just a bit out of the way.

Mildert (@mildertbar)

A: The Little Lad is embarassing to order but so worth it. Mildert is in a good location close to South and the perfect ‘home away from home’ bar for.

H: Van Mildert was my second favourite bar in first year. It has the pub feel that most of the newer hill colleges lack.

Collingwood (@the_stags_head)

A: My personal favourite bar and one I will always be willing to do the long walk from the Viaduct for. For a relaxing pint or a Stagger (a lethal combination of jäger, energy drink, VK and vodka) most of my nights out in first year involved visiting this bar. From the decor to the drinks The Stag’s Head is a great college bar.

H: Objectively The Stag’s Head has to be the best Hill college bar, it has the most pub like feel, many draught options and the outdoor area has heating. However, it is often very busy, so if you want to avoid long waits for drinks and loud rugby boys, I would recommend going to Mildert bar instead.

Grey (@greycollegebar)

A: In my first year this college bar was a tent! Grey always seems to be one of the quieter college bars but their selection of college drinks is unmatched and the friendly atmosphere of the college bleeds into the bar.

H: It used to be a huge tent outside and I kind of miss that. Bring it back.

Butler (@jbsdurham)

A: The standout of Butler Bar (JBs) is certainly their food. Their chicken nugget platter is amazing. Butler is also the perfect space to go and watch big sporting events, and THE place to start a full college bar crawl.

H: Jobo is a fine bar. It is big and often has a good atmosphere, with a good selection of lowcost food served from an earlier time than most bars.

Mary's (@stmarysbar)

A: Mary’s drink The Witch is a delight. While the bar is tiny, it has a cozy atmosphere. Mary’s is also home to the Mary’s challenge so the bar is a must visit even if its just for completing the challenge.

H: Hidden in what feels like a dungeon, probably because their college drink deserves to live in the dungeon. Bonus points for the Mary’s challenge though.

Aidan's (@staidansbar)

A: Aidans is very underrated. While I would not personally try their college drink (The Badger), their beer garden is the perfect Summer spot, and the views from the bar are amazing.

H: Probably the weirdest college bar, it’s often closed for people outside of the college and is very small and often empty. Also, their college drink is criminal.

Trevs (@trevsbar)

A: A uniquely shaped bar. If you come along to a SCLFC social we will certainly be coming here! A great social space and an even better Toastie bar right next to the bar.

H: Telling that I originally forgot to write about Trevs - I think that says it all. Good toasties though. ∎
