5th October 2024  |  Adeline Cheung  South JCR International Officer (23/24)

South On The Map

The International Student Experience

Hey! My name is Adeline and I’m in my final year as a marketing student. Previously, I was also the International Officer for South - student representative for International Students within our community. I know starting university can be daunting, especially when it’s in a country that’s completely new to you. You might feel homesick or out of place, and sometimes, you might even feel lost or isolated. But hey, that’s okay! A lot of people are in the same boat, including myself when I first arrived.

My Advice? Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

Go out and meet new people. Take the initiative to start a conversation, whether it’s with your flatmate, or someone you bump into on the stairs. The topic doesn’t need to be grand - compliment something you genuinely like about them, comment on the weather (it works every time somehow), or offer/ask for help. And of course, don’t forget to introduce yourself.

No pressure - do everything at your own pace. Even if you don’t make friends right away, you will eventually find people you can yap with endlessly (remember, you have three years here).

University also gives you a lot of free time, which is perfect for trying something new.

Whether it’s picking up a hobby, joining a college sport, or starting a gym routine, you might discover a new passion.

Want To Get More Involved? Consider Joining the International Committee

Nominate yourself to be this year’s International Officer at our next parliament (29th October). In this role, you’ll lead a team of Assistant International Reps and work alongside Ethnic Minority Reps to organise events celebrating international festivals like Diwali, Lunar New Year and Durham Global Week.

These events are a fantastic way to experience Durham’s rich cultural diversity and meet new people.

I was also part of the Welfare Committee (WEDI comm), which is dedicated to student well-being. Whether you need advice, help, or just someone to talk to, WEDI comm is your go-to. As the International Officer, you’ll receive welfare training to prepare you for drop-ins specifically for international students. Additionally, you’ll work closely with International Student Reps from other colleges and the International Student Association (ISA) to ensure a supportive and inclusive environment for all international students.

Take Advantages of Unique Opportunities Like Studying Abroad

Get involved, explore, and make the most of your time in Durham. Remember, you’re part of a vibrant, supportive community that’s here to help you every step of the way. I can’t wait to hear about all the amazing things you’ll do during your time with us. If you ever need help, feel free to reach out to me anytime! ∎
