In starting The Hooter, we want to create a space for Southies to be creative and have their voice heard, gaining valuable experience and skills in the process. We hope to give as many students a chance to write for us as possible. There are ways in our Linktree to get involved. Looking forward to hearing from you!
The Hooter became a member of the Student Publication Association in October 2025. This membership also covers all contributors to our paper, meaning anyone who writes for us is entitled to industry-standard training and are eligible for nomination at national student journalism awards. Trying to make the mosts of her degree's skills, Annabelle worked alongside the lovely Amy Talbot to help launch this initiative.
As Editor-in-Chief she'll proof-read, format and ensure a generally good quality newspaper, alongside contributing some of the amazing communication skills learnt from her degree and nights out conversations.
Shabba has managed to find himself on another South College exec. Filled with as much passion for South as South has for him, he is a valued team member.
Shabba hopes to contribute many articles, including a regular 'feel-good' story column focusing on positive stories within the college. Here's to hoping he makes history with his efforts.
If Harriet is half as dedicated to The Hooter as she is to her degree, then the newspaper will cease to exist. She even joined The Hooter thinking it was something else.
Keen to actually write something in her time at Durham, Harriet will contribute many an article (hopefully) and has plenty of ideas she can't wait for you to see!
In the hopes of learning how to write ahead of her future dissertation, Jagoda was keen to get involved in The Hooter.
After a great year helping SCVC with their social media, Jagoda is kindly lending us her skills and phone to post things from.
Mia's maths degree has given her critical thinking skills and problem solving skills, making her an ideal logistics manager.
While she will not have a regular column in the newspaper, her quick thinking and business brain will help us expand the newspaper, and come up with great ideas.
Jake was instrumental in producing the Freshers Week edition, writing articles to helping plan.
His biggest contribution is the production of a website to put all past editions in one place.
