Durham University is full of weird and wonderful lingo - I personally don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone refer to the Bill Bryson library by its proper name! It’s surprising Durham students don’t automatically get an honorary degree is abbreviations at the end of their time here. At first it can seem daunting and confusing, almost like learning a new language, so I’ve written a handy guide to get you started on assimilating to the language of Durham students. These are just a handful of examples of the language that gives Durham University its identity.
Duz, DH1, Duzza: These are all alternate names for Durham
Doxbridge: A combination of Durham, Oxford and Cambridge - a way for us Durham students to make ourselves feel better about our Oxbridge rejection
BNOC: This stands for ‘Big Name On Campus’, whether at South or in the general university there will certainly be some names that everyone seems to know
FREP: You will have met these lovely student volunteers when moving into South and at any Freshers week events you attend. They are returner students that help you have a fun first week in Durham
College Married: At South up to four people can form a family unit to ‘adopt’ freshers
College families/kids/parents: Freshers are paired up with College parents (married units) to form a family
MC: Maiden Castle, Durham University’s sports facility
Chop: Down a drink
Hill: The home of South and other colleges that are not on the Bailey
Bailey: A street/area of Durham that is home to colleges from Cuths to Hatfield
Billy B: The Bill Bryson library. The most popular study spot in Durham
Tilly C: The Teaching and Learning Centre. This building is also a great study area and hosts some lectures and tutorials
Cally C: The Calman Learning Centre
Stash: Merchandise relating to the college, societies or sports teams
The Nest: South College’s bar!
Woodgate: A drink exclusive to Jimmy Allens and a Durham student staple - a mixture of VK and vodka (I personally recommend the Black Cherry one)
Boat Race: This is a common social challenge where two teams stand in a line, taking it in turns to chop a VK, the team who finishes first winning
Overheard at Durham - a Facebook page where you can find anything from housemates to the North Face puffer you lost the night before
Durfess, Tindur and Southfess: Anonymous Facebook pages where you can ask questions, share your opinion or get the name of the attractive student you made eye contact with at Tesco’s self checkout
Mary’s Challenge: A challenge where you run from Mary’s College bar to St Cuthbert’s with a shot in your mouth! It’s harder than it sounds. ∎
