Welcome to the second edition of The Hooter! We wanted to put together this edition to serve as a guide to South College and wider Durham University, primarily focusing on the experience and ‘need to knows’ of your first year at university. This is the fifth year of South College and it certainly has a promising year ahead of it. Your peers have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to finally establish the identity and reputation of South ahead of the upcoming year. Many societies (including this one) have been recently ratified giving you plenty of new things to get involved in and try out. We hope that you take something from this edition - returners and freshers alike - and we would love to see as many people get involved in both The Hooter and wider college community this year!
5th October 2024 | Annabelle Langley The Hooter President (23/24, 24/25), SCUF President (24/25), DUWS President (24/25)

Shaan Ali Remani
You’ve likely had many welcomes already (from Tim, Kye, Lynn, Jamie at reception – if you order a parcel, make sure to say hi to Jamie), but I’m here to offer a slightly different welcome.
Jasmine Lynton
Starting university is an exciting experience, and it kickstarts a new chapter of your life.
Harriet Hurley-Sweeney
After settling in to your university life, meeting your flatmates, hanging up your IKEA tea towels and watching a Jack Edwards guide to Durham fresher’s week; there are things you are going to want to do.
Amy Shuttleworth
Life at Durham University is a unique experience compared to other universities, largely due to its distinctive collegiate system.
Jake Holding
I thought it very telling that the incoming JCR picked the 1st of July – the exact handover date for the exec – to announce this year’s Winter Ball.

The Day It Goes Down (South Day)
Rumour has it you can tell a lot about someone on whether they’re keen to go to the College Service of Thanksgiving at South Day.
Spencer Taylor
Floodlit final, 15th March 2023. That was my moment when I knew how special sport at South College was.
Maisie James
South College is a diverse college full of people with different talents and interests, and our societies are the perfect way that South can showcase these.

Life without alcohol at Durham offers a unique and rewarding experience. In a place like Durham, where traditions run deep, it’s easy to feel pressure to conform to the typical student lifestyle of partying and indulging in alcohol.
Adeline Cheung
Hey! My name is Adeline and I’m in my final year as a marketing student. Previously, I was also the International Officer for South - student representative for International Students within our community.
Mia Stevens
Durham University is full of weird and wonderful lingo - I personally don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone refer to the Bill Bryson library by its proper name!
Jasmine Lynton
Durham is equipped with fantastic places to study. Whether you’re wanting a quiet corner to focus or a more relaxed setting, this city has you covered.
Phoenix Bailey
I always knew I wanted to pursue part-time work while studying at Durham. As someone who actively makes life chaotic ‘for the plot’, I thought it would be a fun challenge to see if I could balance work, school, and (hopefully) a social life.

O Great Oswald, Bless Our Show
Enter me, a 2022 fresher studying Music. Trudging around the Societies Fair – a rite of passage for every Southie – nothing catches my eye. Besides, I was never much of a clubs person at school.
Jagoda Szalewicz
Music pulses through the room as the crowd's cheers ricochet off of the walls of the Hub, I take a deep breath and step onto the stage.
Charlotte Clipston
Upon starting university, one of the main pieces of advice you’re given is to join a society, meet people, and get involved, but it can be tricky when you don’t have a specific hobby.
Annabelle Langley
A common theme in all of the JCR hustings last year was a desire to improve The Nest, both socially and visually. This has already started to be achieved through the hard work and vision of the current JCR.
Elizabeth Kalusova
South College hosts two seasonal balls in the summer and winter, which celebrate the South community, our achievements, and the beginning and end of the academic year.
