All About South College Music Society
Upon starting university, one of the main pieces of advice you’re given is to join a society, meet people, and get involved, but it can be tricky when you don’t have a specific hobby. There are so many different groups and interests to pursue, so I’m here to tell you about one of South College’s finest.

Music was always something I’d been interested in, but never actively pursued. I wasn’t sure if I had the talent or the confidence necessary to call myself a musician. Despite my initial hesitation, it was one of the many societies that I decided to try out, and I loved it so much that now I’m president!
Having only been revived last year, it was a small society, but solid nonetheless. Throughout the year, there was always something on – primarily the fortnightly open mic nights held in The Nest. These attracted a brilliant community, full of encouragement and applause. I personally received some wonderful motivational speeches that pushed me to step out of my comfort zone and take to the stage, something which was unimaginable months prior.

This year, we plan to expand upon these events, with weekly music groups, fun challenges, and many performance opportunities available throughout the year. These range from college formals to big shows in collaboration with the other performing arts societies – keep your eyes peeled for the Oswald’s Players pantomime coming up in first term!
At the core of South Music, there is endless support, applause, and love for everyone. You may even surprise yourself by ending up on a stage at South Day, singing to more people than you’d thought you ever could! We look forward to seeing you at one of our events soon! ∎
