From Training to Floodlit Finals - Everything You Need to Know
Floodlit final, 15th March 2023. That was my moment when I knew how special sport at South College was. Stood under the floodlights of Maiden Castle, surrounded by my favourite people, with hundreds of South College students in the stands chanting renditions about Adam Nicklin’s neck. It is a moment I constantly play over in my head and feel incredibly proud to be a part of, and I can promise you that every student in South has their own unique moment as part of a sports club or society where they felt the same.
Despite South College only being founded in 2020, the progression of our sports clubs has been dramatic. Take South Running for example, who came second in the College Relay season at their first time of asking and received the Owl Award; or South Cue Sports, who were asked to represent the University at the York Varsity and won in less than a year of being established; or South Football, whose women’s team won Floodlit in 2022 and the men reached the final the year after. Despite only existing for four years, we have surpassed the majority of long-established colleges and it’s truly an exciting time to be part of South College as we go from strength to strength.

I can’t emphasise enough how it changed my experience at uni by being part of the football team. First term at uni can be a scary and lonely time, but by stepping outside your comfort zone and joining a sports club or society at South you’ll meet some incredible people and create moments you’ll remember for the rest of your life. I still remember my first social for the football club, stood on a bin in South’s car park singing 'American Boy' by Estelle in front of about 50 people whilst wearing football shorts and socks and a shirt and tie.
Enjoy your first year and fully embrace it by joining as many sports clubs as possible (South Football I hope), I am incredibly envious that you have another three or four years to experience it. ∎
