A: Like Collingwood, this bar feels like a traditional pub. It offers a great outdoor space and their Toad drink is the best tasting college drink on the Bailey.
H: Always very busy, it’s cute but their college drinks are nasty after the first sip.
A: While the Castle drink is not a standout, that is overshadowed by the fact you are drinking in a castle. The perfect place to go to end your bar crawl or just have a relaxed drink, The Undie is the gem of college bars.
H: It’s obviously pretty because it’s in the castle, but the vibes are always a little off in there. They also put equations on the board to solve for a free point which is discriminatory for us Bachelor of Arts students.
A: After having either a Tickler or a Lioness the nights trajectory changes. Although it resembles an airport lounge, something about Hatfield draws you in. Its charm lies in its ability to be a must-visit wether it is completely empty or bustling.
H: Everyone compares this bar to an airport lounge; however, this reference is too far above my tax bracket to understand. It has surprisingly good vibes for being Hatfield, but it feels wrong to give them my money.
A: By far the prettiest college bar, and it has the best value college drink - a Disco Water. In Summer the outside space is amazing, and they do my favourite Chorizo crisps so I would recommend making Chad’s one of your go-to bars.
H: Really beautiful conservatory vibe upstairs, although there are about two seats up there and downstairs is a smelly dungeon. Bonus points for being the only bar with red stripe on draught though (I believe).
A: While not technically a college bar, no Bailey bar crawl is complete without a trip here. Interesting wall decor and a great selection of cocktails.
H: If you’re a fan of the Durham Union Society then you will love it here. For everyone else it can quite be quite a daunting experience but I did meet Ainsley Harriott here so many fond memories.
A: Johns is quite a small college bar, but offers amazing prices and selection. The beer garden in Summer has amazing views. The most underrated Bailey bar.
H: It’s basically a cellar designed for hobbits or about five people, however, the outside area is big so it’s good for nicer weather.
Neither Hill nor Bailey, we cannot provide a review on these as Ustinov is postgrad only, and since the scrapping of the old Hild Bede site, the new bar is yet to be seen. ∎
