2023 Summary

Isabel McGinty  Compass President (22/23) and Head of Sponsorship (23/24)

Compass Charity Fashion Show 2023 was an incredible success raising £4,157 for St Cuthbert's Hospice, bringing the total fundraising for the Charity since the show’s inception in 2022 to over £10,000.

A dedicated team of over 20 exec members and 30 models spent their summer term planning, choreographing and rehearsing to put on a spectacular sell-out event.

Our events team organised a fabulous launch party, our sponsorship team secured many impressive partnerships; from generous brands such as Oppo ice cream and Sea Change Wine, and our creative team choreographed and sourced fashion for 6 themed walks. Overall, Compass 2023 was an incredible success and I can’t wait to see what Compass 2024 has in store on the 17th of June! This year I am Head of Sponsorships for Compass and know the show is on track to be spectacular.

2024 Theme Summary

Liv Greenburgh  Compass Creative Director (23/24)

The theme for Compass Charity Fashion Show this year is Modern Mythopoiea: exploring the transient nature of contemporary life, rooted in the myths of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Delving into the Roman poet Ovid’s anthology of stories taken from Greek and Roman mythology, discernible themes stand out which persist in the modern world. Each walk identifies a prominent theme in the poem and brings it into the contemporary. Throughout Metamorphoses Ovid’s returns to the theme that art is a mechanism in which people can surpass suffering. Thus, the show opens with Expression a walk that centres around the struggle to celebrate creativity in the corporate world, emphasising the importance of individuality within the confines of a dress code. Walk 2 ‘Connection’ explores the theme of love and turmoil in Metamorphoses. This walk will explore the difficulties of love in the modern-age where unrest creates barriers to love. Walk 3 ‘Narcissism’ follows the story of Narcissus, who falls in love with his own reflection, staring at himself until he died. This walk will explore the role of social media in modern society and the way it perpetuates narcissism and self-obsession leading to insecurity, isolationism, and apathy. Walk 4 ‘Flux’ navigates the end of Metamorphoses where Ovid iterates that people are in a constant state of transition and evolution. ‘Flux’ views this in the contemporary where hyper consumerism is causing change at an exponential rate. The show ends on ‘Origins’: a reminder that all humans originate as equals in nature where we can all find peace and purity of self, beyond societal pressures. Throughout these five walks Compass continues Ovid’s themes creating a new modern mythology.

Fundraising Initiatives

Claire Deery  Compass Head of Events of Fundraising (23/24)

The Compass Wardrobe

The Compass Wardrobe has been set up as a term-time wardrobe for those in South College and beyond. The aim is to raise money in aid of St Cuthbert’s Hospice whilst simultaneously reducing the impacts of fashion on the environment. We all know the fashion industry is hugely harmful to the environment and that re-wearing clothes is super important, however, people are not always keen, so The Compass Wardrobe enables students to have a wider wardrobe to borrow from, meaning that you can constantly have new ‘looks’ without having to both break the environment and your bank account. If you have any dresses you would like to donate to The Compass Wardrobe we would be very grateful or if you have any dresses you’re happy to ‘loan’ out, we would love to take them on board! All you need to do is DM us on Instagram @thecompasswardrobe to rent/donate!

Fundraising Events

The Events and Fundraising team of Compass have been working hard to make the end of term a fun one whilst also raising vital funds in aid of the local St Cuthbert’s Hospice. We kicked things off with a Launch Party, with feature Compass Cocktails. Additionally, this whole month we’ve had an active donation tab running at The Nest, where every drink bought can have an optional donation fee added (minimum of 50p). We’re very excited to see what the final total raised over the term has been from these added drink donations. Our next event on Thursday 6th June was a Pub Quiz, expertly hosted by Thomas Pearce comprising three rounds of inventive questions and fun!! Then, Sunday 9th June saw South take on Speed Dating hosted by Sofia Risino and Finlay Brown giving everyone the opportunity to chat with each other - whether it be to make friends or more!! We’re very grateful for all the success so far. Compass Games, an afternoon of traditional ‘sports day’ fun, three-legged races and netball matches was a final hurrah before the big day!!! 17th June is Compass where we’re going to host more fundraising activities with some prizes to be won - we look forward to seeing you all there!!!

This Year So Far (2024)

Charis Omer  Compass Co-President (23/24)

Compass’ progress so far this year has been fantastic. We started by picking our date, and getting back in touch with Erin, our contact at St Cuthbert’s Hospice who we have worked with previously. After opening exec applications we were blown away by the amount of applications and ended up with a fantastic group of 29 exec members split across various teams: Sponsorship, Fashion, Publicity, Events and Fundraising along with other individual roles.

After a successful period of model auditions as well, we added 26 models to the team.

Working with St Cuthbert’s Hospice for a third year in a row means that this year we have a number of historical arrangements in place that we can continue. On the 4th June, the Fashion Team, headed by Lily Harding, our Creative Director, Liv Greenburgh, and myself, Charis Omer, popped over to two of the Hospice’s charity shops, located in Prince Bishops Shopping Arcade and Claypath, to pick out some amazing garments to incorporate into our show. Working with St Cuthbert’s Hospice and using their charity shop items has been a key feature of our show since its outset and something we wish to continue in future years. Not only does it help us fill our walks, but it showcases the amazing pieces that one can find in their shops. Additionally, if any of the models or audience members want to buy the garments they can reserve them directly throughout the show! This week we are lucky enough to be doing a photoshoot on St Cuthbert’s Hospice’s grounds, in continuation as we have done in our two previous years, to publicise the charity shop garments that will be used in our show.

Our models and exec are doing some amazing individual fundraisers as well!

Hollie Williams lifted 7600kg in under 4 hours; Ella McAvoy ran 24km in 12 hours; Liv Greenburgh ran a 24 hours marathon; Amy May is running 100k in the build up to the fashion show; Rolannie Houslin is running 1k for every £1 donated; Camille Bordes is rowing 100k on an ERG; and Tom Bever, Alia Radjabou and Ben Finbow are rowing 100k on the water (28 laps of the Wear).

So far, we have secured amazing sponsors and are still trying to confirm some more. Currently, are sponsors are LoveCorn, Humanitea, Greggs, Whittards, Starbucks, Rudy’s, Blu Studioz, Radisson Blu, Weleda, Riverwalk Nails and Beauty, Market Wines, Emily Ward Art, Only Made by Hand and JJ Hardwick both through products placed on the table and for raffle prizes. This year, we are again so lucky to be able to showcase the work of so many amazing designers. On the line up this year are House of Dayida, Abbi Turnball, Madeleine Macdonald, Kendal McDermott, Amelia Shaw, Maddy Grimmond, Maisie Delaney and Isobel Jones, with some more we’re hoping to confirm before the show.

Along with our 5 thematic walks, swimwear, underwear and exec walks, our entertainment this year consists of a pre-show performance from the fabulous band Grassfed Salmon, featuring South’s own Owen Godsall, and spectacular mid-show performances from DU Pole and Mary’s Dance. We will also hear from Erin Wright, who works for St Cuthbert’s Hospice, to explain just how far our donations will go. On the night there will also be a raffle and promises to raise even more for the Hospice. And the fun doesn’t end once we’ve wrapped up, stay tuned to our socials for more details regarding the After Party!

As I am writing this, we have entered the week leading up to the show, which no doubt will be a lot of hard work and dedication from all of our exec and models, but I know we’re going to smash it. Rehearsals for our walks are going well, and our models are becoming more confident with the choreo. I can’t wait for you all to see the immense amount of effort that has gone into the show this year and hope to celebrate with you all on the 17th! ∎
