Hooters Take On South Day

It is June 3rd, 2024. The birds are chirping and the sun is (somewhat) shining, but this isn’t just any old Monday; this is the most important day of the year for any Southie. This is South Day. We’ve just celebrated our third annual college day, and whether you had to miss it for any reason, had too much of a good time to remember what happened, or simply want to relive the memories once more, allow me to recount the day to you in this South Day recap.

The day kicked off with a performance from Orchard Thieves as the Southies started flooding in, proudly sporting their stylish off-white t-shirts. Around this time I got my first Factor 50 in, one of The Nest’s themed cocktails: a mix of Midori, Malibu, lemonade, pineapple juice, and a dash of lime. This drink went down an absolute treat and prepared me perfectly for the jungle run, in which I, very humbly, obliterated my housemate Harriet.

Unfortunately, Factor 50 could only carry me so far, and its limits had been pushed on the assault course, meaning that I (as most of us) was repeatedly wiped out on the meltdown. Having worked a sweat up from the occasional ducking, occasional jumping, and not-so-occasional falling over, we headed back into the Nest for a refreshing south sunset, which truly lived up to its name. With its hues of orange and pink, it could easily be crowned South’s prettiest cocktail to date.

Feeling rejuvenated and ready for the south-tivities ahead, we headed up to the plaza. Greeted by the fairy lights twinkling above us, a cover of 'Not Nineteen Forever', and about a hundred people sporting our beloved Nest on their backs, we take on the giant chess. Not much of a success, seeing as none of us can play, nevertheless pieces were definitely moved. Ultimately deciding to leave the chess to Anya Taylor-Joy, our group moved on to mini-golf. Now, this may come as a shock to you based on the track record I’ve just described, so prepare yourselves: we are yet again completely shown up by the mini-golf course. We’ll chalk that up to the fact it was set up on a slant.

Shaking off our losses with a boogie to Grass Fed Salmon’s impeccable rendition of 'Fit But You Know It', we joined in the face painting, which I’m dubbing the most successful ent of the day.

There is such a range of personalities within the college, but what truly tied us all together on South Day was the fact that every face you passed was adorned with purple stars and various flags, each one a vivid testament to the unique identities that make up South.

My housemate proudly flaunting a pig on one cheek and St George’s Cross on the other, and myself a Polish flag, we grabbed dinner at the burger van. Feeling like we’d just reached our own version of a land flowing milk and honey - though with less milk and honey and more gravy and veg burgers - we took our seats in front of the stage, nourished and ready to jam out to the fabulous music of The Grale Soul Sessions as a night drew to a close. ∎
